We interviewed Mr. MOK Chun Yin, an international student from Hong Kong who graduated from the University of Aizu, ICT Global Program: All-English Course on September 15, 2021, about his experience at the university and his future prospects.

What did you like as a child?
I was very interested in computers and devoured books about Steve Jobs and Microsoft when I was in elementary school. At that time, I already knew I wanted to be a programmer.
How did you get into the University of Aizu?
I always wanted to study abroad after graduating from high school, and my first choice was Japan. I was looking for a university in Japan where I could study computers and one that allows students to take entrance exams with a focus on science subjects, which I am good at, so the University of Aizu became my school of choice.
Please tell us about your study at the University of Aizu.
The most important feature of our university is that we are able to specialize in computer science and engineering. In addition, students can learn about a wide variety of computer-related fields. I don't think there is any other university where you can study computers so widely and deeply. If you study at the University of Aizu, you will be able to apply your knowledge at your future workplace.
The second feature is that there are many professors from other countries. The classes and evaluations I receive from highly specialized and unique professors are strict and detailed, which I think is good for my learning.
How was socializing with your friends?
I have become great friends with some of the first unique international students I met. I made some friends who came here on a six-month exchange program, and we still keep in touch. I had a huge culture shock, not only from the land, but also from the people I met. For example, I have been exposed to professors and friends who have ideas and ways of dealing with things that I had never thought of before, and I have adopted those ideas many times. I was also amazed at one friend's boldness and self-confidence, and realized that I had always had a free and creative side.
My friends and I went to many interesting and beautiful places. When I participated in volunteer work in Nishi-Aizu, I cleaned irrigation canals with local people and learned the importance of this work. I also had the opportunity to hear about the actual experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake at a church in Aizuwakamatsu City, which was a valuable learning experience for me. Being able to interact with international and local people is a unique feature of the University of Aizu and the land of Aizu. I am grateful for all the encounters and experiences I have had here.
Please tell us about your plans after graduation!
After participating in an internship, I will join the company Mercari. I will start working in Tokyo in October. I am looking forward to Tokyo, the people I will meet, and the work I will do. After four years at the University of Aizu, I have grown by breaking down stereotypes and preconceived notions, and I am now ready to take the next step. I'm very excited.
Do you have any advice for undergraduates and people who want to enroll in the University of Aizu?
I feel like I don't need to give any advice because everyone is unique, but if there is one thing I would recommend, it is to be honest with oneself. It means acknowledging your feelings, opinions, and what you want to do, without denying them. You don't have to refrain or stop your opinions or actions because of worrying about what others think. In the same way, it's good to look at other people's opinions, ways of doing things, and actions with an open mind, without preconceived notions or judgments about what is good or bad. We have many opportunities to interact with people both locally and around the world. In order for us and the world to develop, we need to become aware of things that we have never thought of before, in other words, we need to gain new knowledge.
